Coloring Sisterlocks

Summer is around the corner and people are wanting to color those locks but i want to give you my personal experience with coloring locks. I actually started coloring my sisterlocks with Clairol's Texture & Tones Blazing Burgundy when my locks were about 8 mos old. I loved the color and received many compliments on it. I would have to color every 4-8 weeks to keep the color. In March I tried another color from a different brand and it turned my locks a muppet red. I love Jim Henson muppets but I didn't want to look like one! So two days later I colored my hair black using miss Clairol's Black Velvet Conditioning Color recommended to me by a Sally's Consultant to correct the color on my hair. I thanked God that my hair didn't fall out and I used a Intensive Therapy Protein Fortifier & Moisturizer from ion to repair any damage and to keep my locks healthy. I decided to color my hair black because I want to give my hair a break from color. I do believe that the color had cause some damage to my ends which are chemically treated from a texturizer that I had before locking up. I have started cutting these ends which you see below. After giving myself a trim and washing & conditioning with Carols Daughter's Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner my locks look full and healthy!
If you decide to color make sure that you know that permanently coloring your hair changes it's structure and structural damage to the hair strand must occur. Alkaline developer hydrogen peroxide ranges from volume 10 to 40. It's best to stay within 10 to 20 because the higher you go the more damage to the hair strand. Most coloring kits do not exceed the 20 volume range. If you use permanent color make sure you condition, condition, and condition to keep your locks healthy! The use of powdered bleach in NOT recommended on locks. Semi-permanent hair color is the safest type of color for locks. The color results do not lighten the hair strand but deposits color on surface layers. It does not dry or damage the hair strands.( referenced from the Tapestry of Dreams the Sisterlocks Book by Dr. Joanne Cornwell)
If you want the safest route for coloring Henna is the way to go. I used Henna in black when my hair was a TWA ( teeny weenie afro). Henna can be used on weak hair too because it does not cause any damage to the hair strand.

I was very excited to attend the Taliah Waajid's Natural Hair Show on April 10th in Atlanta, GA. I enjoyed meeting other locticians and Sisterlock Consultants. There were many vendors showcasing their hair & beauty products. I also enjoyed performances from different artist including Yolanda who I was fortunate to meet. This Natural Hair Show is usually every year during the month of April so if your interested in going natural or already rocking natural hair try to check out this show you won't be disappointed!

So How do I get there from here??

Many locked sistas dream of long abundant flowing Sisterlocks! We are anxious to experience lengths that are hair never have been to when it was chemically treated. Like actress Giovannie Samuels who locks were started by Dr. Cornwell when she was eight and has rocked her locks for seventeen years now! So you ask how do I get there from here? Here are some tips:

1. Do everything you can to ensure that your locks are done properly in the beginning. Seek out a Certified Sisterlock Consultant in good standing who will work with you on a consistent basis at a price that you can afford over the long term.

2. Heed your Consultant's grooming and maintenance instructions. Make sure you develop good habits from t he beginning for shampooing and keeping your locks separated between re-tightening appointments.

3. Very importantly keep a regular re-tightening schedule. You should never allow your locks to bunch up or get too loose at the root area. Contact your Consultant as soon as you notice any irregularities so they can be remedied before they turn into damaging problems.

4. Use Sisterlock Starter Shampoo for your weekly maintenance. This shampoo is formulated to ruffing up the hair cuticle to help the process of locking the hair.

With patience you too will soon have beautiful longer fuller locks! Enjoy your journey :-)

2008 Atlanta Photo Shoot

Some more photos from the Atlanta 2008 photo shoot.

Hey Is That You?

At Dr. JoAnne Cornwell's book signing I found my self also signing a picture of myself in the book for some ladies. The photo shows me when I was a newbie ( 6 months into my journey) While Dr. Cornwell was signing my book I thanked her for adding me into her book and that I still love my clips ( I was wearing one there) She asked me who told me that I was in the book? I said Shirley Wedgeworth aka Blaqkofi told me I was in the book.

Dr JoAnne Cornwell Comparison Pics

The bottom photo was taken March 2008 and the top Feb 2010. What a difference 2 yrs can make! I was standing at a vendors table by the entrance to the Bishop Arts Theater and the door opens and Dr. JoAnne Cornwell walks in. She looked right at me ( maybe because my eyes where bugged out with excitement) and said wow your hair has grown! I couldn't believe she remembered me from the Atlanta training class in 2008. Dr. Cornwell was in great spirits and was making me laugh as you can see from the photo that Bruce Boyd of NuDred took of us.
